There is literally no method to unworlding. Let me explain.
First and foremost, you're already unworlded. The Dayly Dreame wherein you read these words is an offshoot of the Unworld. Not the other way around... horrors! Whatever terminology you use for the inexplicable, you have to realize that the human form is not the source of the inexplicable.
All worlds, whether sensible or wonderlandish or somewhere in between, are created by the same process. An adjustment of the seven harmonics of awareness, as to how much of your total energy each one receives, provides an infinite variety of flavors for you to mistake for reality. While in fact, reality is just pure awareness without the syrup. Physical reality in not more real than supposedly non-physical realities, in fact non-physical realities general don't feel particularly non-physical while you're experiencing them. It's possible to mistake any world for a physical world, depending on who's doing the mistaking, more than what's being mistook. The thing to remember is that this stuff is not technical nor difficult in itself. What's difficult and time-consuming is overcoming the notion that changes of state are impossible, or only learnable by experts, mystics, and highly advanced spiritual beings. Or worse, people who buy the course, seminar, book, and online membership. Utter poppycock is not always easily transcended; this could take a while, so let's get started.
Mindset, when correct, will always cause unworlding, whether you have ever heard of unworlding or not. Plenty of unworlders from every culture and epoch have never heard of unworlding by any of its synonyms. They'd be surprised to learn that other people don't get remarkably lucid in their dreams, for example. But first you'd have to explain to them what lucidity in dreams is, because they've never heard of it, they just experience it all the time and assume everyone else does too.
So doesn't that mean that achieving the right mindset is the only method to unworlding? So we should therefore be beating down the doors of the mindset factory? Devouring happy-happy-joy-joy books, courses, etc.?
Nope. You can't pursue the Magical Mindset directly. If you do, you'll end up chasing your tail. It's depressing to chase that happy feeling that you've enjoyed in the past or imagined as your future, and to watch your attachment to the goal cause it to retreat. Like the Queen of the Unworld, Rhiannon, retreating on a slowly sauntering horse from a would-be suitor who ran himself ragged in vain. The faster he chased Magic, the more easily Magic escaped him. The Magic Mindset is not something you can control, pin down, or conquer like a weaker opponent. It is inherently no such thing, and you can't change this, so don't bother trying to be the first person to ever accomplish it. That's what everyone else is trying to do; let them have at it.
The purpose of Synfonemia is to predict what method is right for making someone a reliable unworlder, and now that Synfonemia as a philosophical framework is more-or-less usable, warts and all, this method turns out to be the methodless method. It is possible to gain access, off and on, to the Magical Mindset, and thus to spontaneous increase lucidity as a side effect. This desired increase of lucidity has an apparent mind of its own, especially to a beginner. And one point of this chapter is that all lucidity is spontaneous since the direct approach to it feeds mirage with paradox. Lucidity is always a side effect, because low lucidity is the default experience of human beings. The earth exists because it springs forth from the human mindset, as a safe place for the human being to be human, kind of a lowest-common-denominator halfway house for idiots. You can lead yourself to the Unworld, but you can't make yourself experience it with maximum possible lucidity. Only when you're ready--and that's another reference to mindset--then you'll experience a sudden increase of lucidity spontaneously.
So hopefully I can now stop repeating myself: mindset over method... every time. But don't chase that mindset, it will exhaust you and make you doubt your more useful understandings of this practice.
Instead, know the secret underlying the secret standing behind the secret that can make you understand what lucidity is in a way that's actually useful: awareness is the only thing that's real, all worlds are a fiction created by relatively untrained dream bodies not cooperating with each other, and splitting up your limited individual energy among all your dream bodies harmoniously will indirectly land you in the Magical Mindset. Normally this happens more or less by accident since it's not easy to do on purpose when you don't know what it feels like to succeed at it. Maybe instead of "by accident" I should say "by trial and error," since the root word of "trial" is "try". But sustained effort without a clue is a pilgrimage to an unknown place undertaken without a map, so over the past half a century and more, I've developed the Frawmbickly Acts which can take the place of directly flogging the Magical Mindset into submission in hopes that it might condescend to meet you halfway and take you to increased lucidity on its own volition.
These Frawmbickly Acts were not discovered and fine-tuned with the direct goal in mind of making someone able to get unworlded. They were developed with the goal of making existence on earth more bearable for someone who consistently feels he must certainly have crash-landed on the wrong planet as a newborn and yearns for a reasonably graceful way out, now that he supposedly knows how to change his own diapers, before anyone finds out that he's still as lost as he ever was and waiting for the house of cards to fall down on him. Upon retirement from the human rat race, and taking on the challenge of becoming a full-time unworlder, I discovered that without the ability to create a fertile field for the Magical Mindset to find me in, success at unworlding could be more fickle than froth on a frogpond.
Fortunately, whether we know how to do it directly or not, the energy needs of your seven dream bodies can be balanced against each other, and when a certain delicate balance is reached, something snaps into place and synthesizes a new vehicle of freedom. I call this something "the Body of Air" or "the Miruvor" or "the only ride there is" or simply "the Moment of Choice". Your Soul Retinue harmonized as a single body, but not just any body: one you can sit down in and drive around and go anywhere you want in and not come back till you feel like it.
Fortunately there are specific physical acts--unrelated to new age or old age practices--for balancing the dream bodies or chakras or harmonics of awareness or whatever you want to call them. There are no universally silver bullet techniques or potent magic words or rituals outside of the intuitive harnessing of the Placebo Effect by a practioner wise enough to choose his beliefs productively; just practical advice about everyday actions you can take now that will help you get unworlded later. That's how real magic happens: the world is like weather, like a found object, a mishmash of waveforms, complexes of vibrations, waiting for someone who isn't a total idiot to come along and tune them up somewhat. Sustaining harmony among seven bodies called 'the harmonics of awareness' which are so powerful as to literally create your world... is possible... but not without some practice and maybe some motivation, inspiration, enthusiasm, experience, a magical touch of childish innocence with a dash of innocent humor, and something that could only be interpreted as the good timing we mistake for luck.
Frawmbickly Acts
The Frawmbickle is an act that takes you outside of your comfortable rut. Its opposite is automatically doing what you usually do: the Frumbessle. I love to write about our comfortable addictions, the Frumbesslings that imprison us in the inertia of the human form; this one is about the Frawmbickly Acts, those activities which can indirectly get us released.
I was hoping to define the 'Seven Frawmbickly Acts' one for each of the overtones of awareness, or the 'Nine Frawmbickly Acts,' one for each of the harmonics of awareness, but the result was inflexible and contrived. I can't be trying to write scripture here, because I'm always learning more and I need the freedom to add or change to the list of Frawmbickly Acts.
The following Frawmbickly Acts are not in any order of importance.
Unworlding Journal
Also known as dream journal or just journalling. The journal is an act of communicating to your dream bodies that you want more lucidity in your life badly enough to sacrifice your time and energy to go out into the Unworld, watch for it, wait for it, get it, and bring it home. Attention is the money of the Unworld, so paying Attention to your unworlding experiences of any level of lucidity indicates that you value lucidity enough to bother paying for any lucidity you can get, i.e. paying Attention to it. Journalling mixes your physical life into your unworlding life and they merge into a single integrated life. You merge with your dream bodies. You inherit your dream bodies' talents and they inherit yours. By 'you,' I mean the 2-3-4 Body/Mind/World.
Before I started my current practice in November of 2015, I had conducted other unworlding practices, so I knew, not as a matter of opinion, hope, or belief, that keeping a lovingly detailed journal would double, triple, quadruple, quintuple the value of my dream life in terms of lucidity, memorableness, detail, vividness, etc. All of which are just signs of lucidity, but people need to retrain themselves to see lucidity as the degree to which you are aware instead of defining unworldings as either lucid or non-lucid.
For two years I kept an apologetic dream journal in which I carefully separated my actual experiences in the Unworld from my opinions and interpretations of those experiences, characters, and unworlding places. This was probably a good idea for a while because I was liable to go off on psychobabble tangents at first, but once I got this out of my system, I finally realized that putting all my comments in [brackets] to separate experience from interpretation was a matter of writing a journal for peers in the physical world instead of writing it for my Soul Retinue. So now, instead of apologetically saying, 'I walked through the door into a large, open, grassy field [thru Urumara into the Nowhere], I will write, 'I went through the Urumara, which I mistook for a doorway, and into the Nowhere, which appeared as a grassy field.' In this way I signal to my Uppers that I understand their world and am ready to merge our two worlds into one. If I'm wrong about any of my interpretations, I should be able to figure this out and make adjustments along the way, instead of being too careful. You've heard about the guy who was too shy to try...
Blaffinveigle
Instead of focusing on your individuality and how special and important you are, perform Blaffinveigle. Besides just meditating or stopping the internal dialog as often and as long as possible, if you Notice the manifestations of the Moment via at least three physical senses at the same time, you will instantly shift into an altered state of consciousness where it is impossible to maintain your usual thread of inner chatter, the internal dialog which creates the world you mistake for reality. Start by alternating vision, hearing, and bodily sensations such as touch, taste, smell, sense of temperature, and any sense of motion (etc.), and when you can do this, try to hold awareness of more than one sense at a time. If your eyes are closed, vision is still important, as you can see with the mind's eye when your physical eyes are not annoying you with the 'facts'.
Blaffinveigle comes in three flavors: positive, negative, and neutral. This insight was long in coming and answered the question that had been bugging me, "What's the difference between Blaffinveigle and meditation?"
So-called 'deep meditation' is Negative Blaffinveigle. This doesn't imply something bad, any more than the negative wire in an electrical circuit is bad. When it comes to the flow of energy, positive plus negative makes the world go round.
Negative Blaffinveigle is the act of stopping the internal dialog. Shutting off that song-and-dance melodrama that's running through your head. Negative Blaffinveigle should be practiced at all times unless you need the internal dialog as a tool, like when you have to talk to yourself in order to figure something out or remember where you parked your car or decide whether or not six-legged elephants are supposed to be pink with green spots. In general we custom-create our world with our self-talk, so in the absence of our stinky self-talk or "chattering monkey mind" as meditators like to call it, the normally unappreciated Remote Mind--comprised of fluidity, appreciation, intuition, and expansion--gets to participate substantially in the creation of your world instead. This is a giant leap for you and not a bad step for mankind.
Positive Blaffinveigle: why is it that it seems so hard to just forget about the past and the future and pay Attention to the Moment. Pay what? Who says Attention is something that we 'pay'? Just everybody. What else would you do with Attention? You can focus it like eyes, which seems to indicate it's a sense organ of some kind. Sense organs receive information better if they're focused better, i.e. if we use them better to pay Attention better. You can give Attention to something of value; again it's a medium of exchange. For example, because you pay Attention to your child, your child will Notice that you think he or she's worth the trouble. Your child grows up to become an asset to his own existence if not the entire community, as if your Attention was an investment, while Joe Blow's kid grows up to be a useless schmuck because he was starved for Attention as a child. So if Attention is a medium of exchange like money that we 'pay' in order to receive something in return from a Moment which apparently 'receives' this money called Attention, what would that mean? Just think about it, as if the words we use actually mean something; I know it's a stretch.
Well, it seems to mean that Attention--which is obviously a form of awareness, perhaps awareness being used as a tool--is a utilitarian currency of exchange like money or electricity or energy, and the recipient of the funding called 'Attention' is preferably something called 'the Moment.' Then the thing of value received in exchange for such payment is experience. Which we can remember because experience is something that happens to you.
But there's also the temptation to pay Attention to a memory of the past or a fantasy of the future. And in the process, how much experience--and consequently how much lucidity--accumulates to hoard in our vaults of valued memories? Very little. The solid world which we unworlders are always trying to escape from has the questionable benefit of giving us memorable experience whether we want it or not. What is a relatively lucid unworlding if not an experience that tried to be foggy and unrealish which you managed to shift more into the solidity zone? More connections, more 3ness, more solid, more stable, more lucid. So in the Dayly Dreame, when you pay Attention to the past or the future, and ignore what's going on around you, it's the same thing as throwing your money in the river. Instead, you could perform Positive Blaffinveigle and just Notice without evaluating the ceaseless, unstoppable action of cause and effect as your Attention is given to nothing but Moments, each a new version of infinity, each infinitely large and infinitely small, but none making undue reference to the past or future. Past and future are not part of experience and resulting lucidity so much as they are major components of the internal dialog. When we fret about the past or future, what is the main component of the fretting? Trying to downplay, deny, reject or outright destroy the nagging feeling that something was wrong or inadequate or is getting ready to be. That's Narxing, the original expression of existence as an individual: Noticing one's separateness from the resto of infinity. To exist as an individual you have to not be the rest of the universe. Using the infinitely variable, predictably inscrutable and generally nonsensical opinions of other people as your reference points in the process of cataloging and prioritizing your worries and woes is a waste of twoness, threeness, and fourness, i.e. separateness, memory, and values.
On the other hand, the first thing I Notice when paying Attention to the Moment is that the Moment never stops changing long enough for me to overscrutinize it, until I lose that current focus. Once again language seems to be revealing that what we focus--the Attention--is a currency. Upon Noticing the ceaselessness of this flow, the endless morphing of what is, it becomes apparent that the Dream Usher must be the center of our being; the 5ness dream body is all about change, motion and flow, and so is the Moment. And the Moment, as slippery as it is, shows every indication of being the only thing that actually exists outside of our awareness of it.
In the Unworld, as I gradually get used to confronting the personification of 5ness, the Dream Usher, I'm starting to like him, but when he first introduced himself to me in an Officially Lucid dream, I accused him of being the dream police and took to the sky to escape him so I could eat my chocolate in peace. Naturally, flying around eating chocolate got me too excited and I woke up in the Dayly Dreame; I should have accepted the limo ride he was offering me.
Neutral Blaffinveigle is a load of fun. I use it at parties and gatherings where I'd rather not be, in lieu of accepting the bitter taste of my least favorite experience, which is boredom. Boredom is truly a danger to your peace of mind, because when I am King, I will have bored people put to death for their own good and the evolution of the species.
Getting back to, "I use it at parties and gatherings where I'd rather not be," not that it makes much difference in my case, since I lack interest in socializing in general, but it just so happens that I live in a country other than the one where I was born, so listening to other people converse is mostly meaningless babble, while actually participating in casual conversation is not something I ever did much when I lived in an English-speaking country anyway. Don't tell me to learn the language; I wrote a book about the language: Advanced Bisaya for Beginners. Gaining fluency in foreign languages is not for linguists and grammarians; it's a social skill. Which puts many linguists and grammarians out of the picture automatically. I'm half a grammarian and about a tenth of a linguist, and one-half plus one-tenth makes me 60% socially incapacitated. I don't mind because it saves me a lot of time.
Neutral Blaffinveigle is well described in a great book by the Tibetan teacher Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche called Tibetan Yogas of Dream and Sleep. This ties in to the true nature of karma, which is just an endless Chain of cause and effect. Neutral Blaffinveigle itself--a practice of non-dualism--is dualistic, it comes in two parts: not grasping and not having aversion. To me, non-aversion boils down to not being judgmental and not having unnecessary opinions, not taking sides. Let's say you're at a party where you don't really want to be, but the spouse and kids are enjoying themselves since they like people more than they like unworlding. We unworlders don't need to be against this, and we don't need to withdraw into a far corner of the back yard, hang out with the dogs or babies, although we can if we want. It's a matter of choosing one's babbleground.
Here's how it works for me, and you can come up with your own version. So much of what people say and do seems silly to me. Nix that. Just blank it out and keep moving. So-and-so is a poser, a status-seeking mental blimp. Never mind. Not important. Pass over that. That certain niece should get out in the sun more and stop using makeup, because blocking the pores is ruining her skin. Not my problem. The teenage girl serving drinks wants me to look down her shirt so she can tell her friends that her mother's uncle wants to grope her. Ignore it all. Someone speaks to me, I respond. I have something to say, I say it. Someone gets a cloud over their face because I say the wrong thing (or so I suspect, not that I have a good eye for that sort of thing). Forget about it.
I use the example of a party since it is a hell of endurance for me to be in a group of people who have nothing more interesting to do than to chit-chat. I'm not a hangout artist, nor do I appreciate why anyone would want to be one. So a party is the perfect place to practice having no judgment, no opinion, no desire--because wouldn't it be so much fun to drink some beer and sing karaoke? I'm a better singer than those others and I even know what the words mean... blah, blah, blah, drop it all. Pass it all over, neither want anything nor push anything away. Not grasping at things or averting things is a huge practice and for a better description, please read Tenzin's excellent book on dream yoga.
I am not compiling this chapter for any other reason than the Frawmbickly Acts make the Unworld more accessible to us. And I have had many successful experiences of accidentally landing in the Magical Mindset where lucid unworldings are the natural result, due to extended periods and/or regular dippings into the methods of Blaffinveigle described above. Thousands of other meditation techniques exist but I've only discussed those that I've had success with.
Continuously Paying Attention
Continuously Paying Attention is Chaining, or CPA if you must, or ADA--All Day Awareness--if you really have to call it that.
Continuously Paying Attention is one of my favorite things to do during a sit-down session or any time I'm sitting around waiting, riding the bus, attending a ball game or social occasion that doesn't really involve me, etc. What I like to do is to Notice sights, sounds and touch-related sensations simultaneously, or else go from one Noticing to another to another trying to find the very last detail in the surroundings. doing this with open eyes brings home the somewhat non-obvious truth that infinity is within sight at all times. Doing it with closed eyes is called Noticing, which can lead directly to the Unworld. Continuously Paying Attention instantly puts me into an altered state of consciousness, i.e. causes the rigid Frumbesslen World to melt into something less predictable, less rigid. These experiences of mini-altered states constitute Reality Check Receptors. They consistently remind me that the state of mental silence is the same state as the unworlding state. Into such a unique mental condition, a reality check may be plugged in, with confidence that it's plugged into a live socket and not a humdrum waste of energy.
At night, Chaining can result in strings of unworldings. At my level of expertise it has given me multiple Officially Lucid episodes in a row, more than once, and untold occasions of returning over and over to related unworlding plot elements and themes. For example, pursuing the same dream character in every dream, all night long. While walking around during the day, it's usually better to Chain from moment-to-moment, Continuously Paying Attention, than it is to obsess about the state of the world, or the state of your marriage, or whether another pedestrian had any right to cut you off on the sidewalk, etc. The power of Chaining is that it can replace the monkey mind, and Positive Blaffinveigle plus Negative Blaffinveigle can in fact make the Unworld come around.
Vac-U-Move
To practice Vac-U-Move, remain physically motionless until the Uppers act in your stead. This is an automatic merging with your dream bodies, no more difficult than holding still, shutting off the Babble, and Noticing. If you do this, you will experience phantom wiggles and whole body movements and rotations along various axes of bodies other than the one you've come to identify as the real one.
A lot of people take this method too seriously. If not moving becomes painful, I rearrange myself. If I have an itch, I scratch it. If I want to swallow, I am free to do so, and therefore I rarely notice the need to swallow since the urgent need to swallow usually never occurs until you can't do so at will, for example if the dentist puts her whole head in your mouth. Or her hand, which is more common, but to me it feels about the same.
In my experience and that of many more expert than I, the attempt to lie perfectly still generates an unpleasant way to not get unworlded. It does work for some, but I've recently experienced my first so-called direct unworlding (from a waking state) by relaxing in bed and mostly ignoring the dictate to not move a single muscle, until I felt the relaxation suddenly turn into something else, a truly altered condition which I've been learning to recognize. I call it the Unibody or the Gravity Blanket but it really doesn't feel like a blanket to me. But I did feel it move up my legs, and next thing you know I'm waking from a short lapse and I'm in bona-fide sleep paralysis and someone is pulling me out of bed by my feet. This is a true story. The moral of the story is, get into the right relaxed frame of body and mind and then only attempt to remain completely motionless when doing so is going to have an immediate effect. In general, most people get nothing but stiff if all they do is lie still. Ask yourself what mindset you are coming from while doing it and don't do it till you are very relaxed. If you have to lie still more than 45 minutes, you need to learn more about getting into the right mindset before lying down. I don't mean you have to have a full-blown unworlding in less than 45 minutes, I mean if you aren't asleep in 45 minutes then your priorities are askew, which is fine, we can change horses midstream if we want, but if you are asleep in 45 minutes or less, then you are by definition unworlded. Whether or not you have the skill to return the conscious mind to alertness so you will remember the experience, that's a different story.
Vac-U-Move is a perfectly valid practice on its own account, never mind trying to pry yourself out of your body with it. I've experienced many phantom wiggles, Awakenings, timeless states, and other altered states of consciousness while doing long sessions of Vac-U-Move. I just don't consider it the magic doorway to success when it comes to unworlding as such. For one thing, you should be able to get extremely relaxed in five or ten minutes tops, and if you can't, then back up and learn how to do that instead of trying to pry yourself out of your body by not moving a muscle for two hours.
Awakenings
Practice experiencing little sleeps and the attendant Awakenings during the day so that the Remote Mind--your "higher" dream bodies--will recognize you when you show up as the 2-3-4 in a dream scene, more or less in a coma, needing their help in order to even remember who you are. The ability to go to sleep twelve times an hour guarantees you mystical experiences only if you use it. So use it. Make the Urumara your favorite place to be. In the absence of the Babble and any worries about the past and future, Awakening twelve times an hour is no exaggeration. This is what makes it possible for your various dream bodies to find each other and meet each other in the light of day. Only in waking reality does the conscious mind reliably know its own name, so do not put Awakenings off till bedtime, or till tomorrow. Nothing builds confidence faster than meeting your own dream bodies several times a day, whether with Official Lucidity or not. And recognizing any seed of lucidity that does exist in a two-second or ten-second unworlding is the key to recognizing it sooner next time and staying unworlded longer, on purpose.Many Awakenings per day is one key to having longer experiences in the Unworld. Don't wait till you're comatose to try and remember your goals. Do Daytime Practices Daily.
It's essential to the process of learning how to unworld that the practitioner should experience the act of going to sleep and immediately waking himself up, over and over, every day. Sessions of Awakenings, coupled with the other Frawmbickly Acts, synergize substantial experiences in the Unworld, compared to lucidity tips and tricks which can force just about anyone to wake up Officially Lucid in a dream for a few seconds, once or twice a month. While any lucidity is better than none at all, tiny glimpses of the Unworld can be as frustrating as half a scoop of ice cream. In order to learn how to remain in the Unworld for longer stretches of time, in my opinion, the beginning practitioner has to obligatorily practice Awakenings during the day. The same goes for anyone who is finding his unworldings too short in duration, no matter how advanced they perceive themselves to be. Even experienced unworlders can find themselves in a mindset malfunction which causes a dry spell or a spell of short experiences, unworldings which abort prematurely.
The reason for this is that we have to keep the Attention trained to stay at the borderline of sleep--the Urumara--instead of jumping one way or the other when it Notices what it's facing. Most people don't linger in the Urumara, because the experience of being there seems to come supplied with Go Juice. You find yourself on the edge of the cliff in the Tunnel opening, and you either back up into the Tunnel, quick, or you leap off the cliff and lapse into total unconsciousness. The idea is to learn how to step off the cliff gently, volitionally, and float into the Unworld like a pro. This ability takes the place of the typical muggles' attitude that the 2-3-4 tends to be entrenched in, which is that you're either asleep or awake. For example, when we wake up, we usually roll over and stretch, open our eyes and start worrying about stuff that doesn't matter. This unfortunately undissolves the Dayly Dreame. We first learn to stop doing this routine in the very beginning of the practice when we have a blank dream journal needing its pages filled out.
But even before thinking about the journal, you should remember to Just-Get-Up. Doing this soon enough during the waking-up process will put you straight back into the Unworld where you belong. Or you could find that remaining mentally and physically motionless upon waking will cause intense hypnagogic visions to continue as long as you keep your mind still and Notice them. You can still taste the last bite of the dream you woke from, and as long as that taste is there, you can expand it into more experiences. Your arms might still be vibrating from the unworlding just interrupted. Depending on what exact state you're in when you wake up, and how you respond to that--for example, whether you remember to keep a still body and mind--you might even wake up in the Green Room, still in the Tunnel, but able to generate full-size, full-color images effortlessly. Or you may wake up in the Projection Room, just past the Urumara, and that can take many forms. You might feel totally physical but accidentally slide out of bed and float next to the bed instead of falling on the floor. You might open your eyes and see your bedroom ceiling a few inches from your face. Or you might wake up in sleep paralysis, feeling the Vibes, or the Vertigo, or hearing auditory hallucinations, etc.
These are all just different experience zones within the Projection Room. You can also wake up beyond the Projection Room in the Nowhere. The tendency of beginners is to not recognize these different states because we assume that being unworlded feels funny, like taking drugs to experience altered states. Well, depending on one's energy configuration at the moment, sometimes it does feel funny to be unworlded, but sometimes it feels 100% normal, because we tend to not know the difference between reality and physicality. To counteract the tendency to give up and open your eyes and start yawning and kicking yourself for not getting more lucidity than you got, it makes sense to get into the habit of waking up motionlessly, keeping the eyes closed, breathing the REM breath, picturing the last dream images lingering in your mind, and pro-actively assume you are already unworlded. An example of the right attitude to take is when you're falling asleep in your chair. Since you are feeling the Suction of Sleep, which is generated by the Dream Usher himself, try to Just-Get-Up, or float out of the chair. It can't hurt to try. You don't really know, for a fact, that you aren't asleep, if you don't try.
During an unworlding, you will often be very close to the Tunnel entrance. You might even be going in and out of the Tunnel repeatedly. This is why we have shorter unworldings instead of longer ones. We go back into the Tunnel (through the Urumara backwards) and assume we have woken up in the body, when we should assume that we are in the Nowhere and wait for another dream scene to form, even if it seems to take some time. We can feel the body lying in the bed. What's so unusual about that? A lot of unworlders report feeling themselves in two bodies at once. We instantly think about peeing, out of habit, whether there is really any such urgency or not. These are all habits that will force themselves on you due to the inexorable momentum of habituation if you have done nothing to change these habits. Experiencing up to a dozen Awakenings in an hour, and doing this every day, will give your 2-3-4 body a totally different perspective on how things work. It will become easy and natural to Just-Get-Up if you catch yourself only starting to wake up, or just Chain back into the Unworld if you wake up in bed still feeling the Vibes. Hook onto the last dream scene you remember, or some dream scene you hope to experience, practice Blaffinveigle, Metsuke, etc., breath the REM breath, and just slip back into the Unworld effortlessly.
The problem is the lapse of consciousness most people experience when going through the Urumara, but we have to have patience with ourselves. Tackle one skill at a time. First learn to go to sleep and wake up over and over and over. Ask yourself, "What Just Happened?" upon each and every Awakening. Officially Lucid or not, who cares? All experience in the Unworld should be taken seriously, because it's your experience, so you should show your various dream bodies that you care about getting to know them by remembering what they did when you were just asleep, even for a few seconds. The increased lucidity will come naturally, in spontaneous experiences. Retaining continuous awareness all the way to the Unworld from your bed takes longer to learn than the method of lapsing out long enough to get past the Urumara, but when it's learned, getting unworlded directly without a lapse in consciousness is the most natural way. Allowing the conscious mind to feel and experience every step of the falling-to-sleep process is Going-To-Sleep-Right, and doing the same thing during the waking-up process is Waking-Up-Right.
Awakenings are generally accompanied by tiny surprise unworldings too short to develop much lucidity, which frequently consist of impromptu meetings with your dream bodies. This practice is done by Continuously Paying Attention up to and beyond the edge of sleep. A part of your day should be sacrificed to this practice if you, like most of us, can't keep it together at night. Being goal-oriented at night, even after the oft-prescribed four-to-six hours of sleep, is not for everybody. On the other hand, it's easy to experience a dozen Awakenings in an hour during an afternoon nap, if you're determined to not sleep deeply. This amounts to learning to go through the Urumara as close to consciously as possible, and then turning right around and going back through it the other way, over and over.
A part of you that bears a certain amount of lucidity gets used to seeing that sleep border from both sides, over and over in a short time. This is a convincing experience which works wonders on your spontaneous nighttime motivation and abilities. It's not possible to exaggerate the importance of little sleeps and the resulting Awakenings. Many unworlders will experience a lapse of awareness or narrow band of unconsciousness at the Urumara itself, but the duration of that lapse will narrow even more with practice, and some people will be able to transit the Urumara consciously, depending on their motivation and prior configurations. Of course my detractors, who will accuse me of being oriented toward experiencing sleep paralysis, will be missing the subtle point that my real interest is knowing, by feel, exactly where the Urumara is, and making the lapse of consciousness at that point as short as possible. For some people, experiencing the Urumara consciously is natural, whether scary or not, and for others, the point is not to try and experience the Vibes or sleep paralysis or any of the other symptoms of passing through the Urumara into the Unworld. The point is the Noticing itself. Upon each Awakening, you ask yourself, "What Just Happened?" In order to get the full benefit of having just experienced something, it really helps to know what that something was. The Urumara is the moment at which you fall asleep, that is, the moment when you get unworlded. But it's so much more.
Veraspect
Like anyone attempting to learn and practice unworlding who doesn't live in a cave, I have to deal with the fact that there are other things going on besides my practice and somehow I have to not let these things destroy my chances of getting unworlded. Every time I blame the perpetrator for waking me or disturbing me, I am sorry I did so. I've even been assaulted and physically damaged for suggesting that a neighbor close his illegal all-night business at 10 p.m. Twice. On the other hand, I can go through my journal and pick out those times when I wrote something like, "Kids outside my window playing, will let the sound of their laughter put me into a trance," then the next entries into the journal will be the sorts of thing that we unworlders would give teeth to experience. Instead of generating ill will over what the environment and the people in it are doing to us to make it impossible for us to accomplish our important work of going to sleep.
Instead of trying to fix and arrange your environment to suit you, change yourself and yourself only. To perform Veraspect, assume that your world is your exclusive creation even if this seems completely implausible. Veraspect is a simple matter of maintaining control of your emotions by inwardly assuming responsibility for creating every aspect of the universe yourself. It doesn't matter if you actually believe this and it doesn't even matter if it's true. Or you can believe it but not understand how it works, or on what level. What matters is that you do, in fact, assume total responsibility for your world, as far as it affects your mood and your confidence in your ability to be asleep and aware at the same time.
The Miruvor has long since adopted the perspective that it's impossible for anyone to do anything to him, as we were informed many years ago by Carlos Castaneda. This is not a matter of pride, since pride is the silliest emotion, one of the greatest wastes of energy ever invented by man. Defending a position is a form of acute psychosis common to the human form, being at the core of much of what takes precedence in entertainment, commerce and politics, which in turn form the core of our social systems, which in turn distract us from any goals worth having. It's the same thing as any pack of apes playing their pecking-order games; whichever ape beats his chest the loudest and the scariest is our new king.
Veraspect is an inward assumption that you create your own universe, but it's not an assignment of guilt to yourself for how rotten things sometimes turn out. Part of assuming responsibility is never apologizing for emotional reasons. No one over the age of 12 should require apologies, so if you get entangled with someone who has to be wheedled into not despising you, hit the road, Jack. It's not about winning or losing, being right, or making anyone else wrong. An interesting point is that assuming total responsibility involves generally not being sorry for anything. We're all in the same boat for the same reason: the Earthville Mental Institution keeps the rest of the universes safe from our unbalanced energy configuration.
Accepting responsibility is seeing things truly, which is the literal meaning of the word Veraspect. You assume you are the center of your universe, Joe Blow is the center of his universe, you accept that, you don't tamper with Joe Blow's world, and when you lie down to enter the Unworld at night, you have no emotional issues to work out in your dreams or to keep you tossing and turning in your bed. By "emotional issues" I mean, revenge fantasies, kiss-and-make-up fantasies, and everything in between. "Miruvor" means mirror warrior. Veraspect is a contest with yourself to see how quickly you can drop emotional issues as they come up during the day. Not resolve them. We are unworlders, not psychologists or social janitors. The better you are at dropping an emotion, the better you will prove to be at resolving an issue. That's the best example you can set for anyone. Die-hard resolvers and completionists are just pesky perfectionists who annoy everyone else to death. The worst part is that they're always looking for regular folks to fix, instead of fixing each other.
This category also brings to mind the more specific phenomenon of sublimating distractions mentioned briefly above. Those kids making noise outside your window must sincerely be seen as dream goblins stirring up your sleep broth, and the sound of their laughter has to be the steam rising off that bubbling broth and wafting into your room, sending you deeper and deeper into trance, closer and closer to... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...
Nubberzuck
Nubberzuck means want what you have. This involves appreciation and trust and can only take place in the Moment. Succeed for the fun of it. The test of this is whether or not you can succeed alone and unwitnessed, gaining no status thereby on any scale of spiritual materialism, yours or anyone else's. The first and most dangerous mistake of practicioners who get a few successes is to fall for the bait: the Ladder of Spiritual Greatness. Spiritual materialism is a matter of climbing this ladder out and away from any unworlding practice in lieu of moving to the next stage of the practicalities of unworlding. You don't need image, status, or ego stroking within some social structure or religious organization or personal new age network. You don't need to collect likes on Facebook or YouTube. You need skills.
I'm not interested in self-improvement for its own sake, since in the face of eternity my personal configuration of identity, memory, and values doesn't mean diddly. It's "me" only to the extent that "I" exist, and from what I've been able to glean from decades of study, I don't actually exist as a person. Not in the face of eternity, I don't. I just don't. I only really exist as pure, infinite, immortal, indestructable, unharmable awareness. The identity, person, life? Just FILE spelled wrong. When it's done it's closed like any other file. Time's not in control of anything once the file's closed, so awareness can revisit the file, jump back into the time zone relevant to that file and do it all over with variations, whatever. Doesn't matter. There's only one awareness. It's infinite. That should be enough, don't you think?
So why the heck am I willing to ruin my day because Mommy only gave me one jelly bean when I wanted two?
A complicated discussion of this topic would be silly because Nubberzuck--wanting what you have--boils down to simplicity itself. But I don't want to give the impression that this is some side issue. So I'm trying to think of more to say about it.
Oh yeah.
Nubberzuck coupled with Blaffinveigle will keep you from trying to meditate while obsessing about whether or not you're getting any results, i.e. getting enough jelly beans. For example, coupled with the act of Awakening from eight hours of what could be considered disappointingly low-lucidity sleep (not enough jelly beans), a Nubberzuck alert will hopefully prevent you from sleeping three more hours in a morbid attempt to force yourself to have an Officially Lucid dream or some damn thing. Which would make it impossible to do an Awakenings session during the day. Which could wind up the deranged cycle they call "the dry spell ".
Metsuke
To perform Metsuke, forget your physical eyes and see with your mind. You have to feel around, when Noticing with your eyes closed, for a panoramic point-of-view that effortlessly sees all the details clearly, instead of focusing on the details. You might have to feel around in the dark because trying to force it will engage the physical eyes out of habit, and when it works, it sorta feels like the image was already there and you were looking right past it. The Attention should be fluid, not fixated. If you're already in a dream scene, look from item to item. If you're just lying down to relax, feel your body as a single Unibody vibration, because that's all it really is; if you're getting ready to dissolve it, the details don't matter. Stop chasing states, get your eyes off the prize, and the states you are ready to experience will find you. Then get your eyes off the prize again... and again... until you see with the mind instead of with the eyes. This type of focusing is effortless when it works and effortsome when it doesn't. I find it occurring by accident when I drop the usual strivingly overfocused approach. All you do to start Noticing is clear the field of inner yik-yak and Notice what's already there under the silence. Appreciate the seemingly random streaks and blobs of colors and lights, do this consistently, and next time you hear someone say that hypnagogia is just random mental noise or neural discharge, you'll fall on the floor laughing.
I've had many incredible experiences learning how to see what certain experts condescendingly call 'random hallucinations' or 'noise'. This was never a waste of time. I spent two weeks in the hospital doing little else but Noticing images when I was awake and having incredible unworldings when I was asleep. I had at least one experience of entering the Unworld directly during this period, from a hypnagogic image. In the early stages of my practice there were incredible experiences of waking up from a dream in the Green Room (the visual-only intake chamber of the Projection Room), walking around the room with my eyes closed still looking at full-color, full-size, three-dimensional images spontaneously wrapping themselves around me and filling the room, for up to half an hour, effortlessly. Spontaneously and unexpectedly. And of course, voluntarily. I'm not some psycho who hallucinates. I had to work at getting into this state, and once there, the rest was easy.
All this depends on understanding or at least putting into practice the difference between seeing with the physical eyes and seeing with the mind's eye. Physically we see different images with two eyes and merge them into a single 3D image which we have to focus on in order to see well. But the mind's eye kinda works the opposite. If you focus in on something, it disappears. The mind's eye, or 3rd eye, or intuition dream body, or 7th harmonic of awareness, sees in a 360 degree perspective, everything in focus at the same time. So if you look panoramically and get the right balance of focus and detachment, you'll see full-blown images. Whole scenes will create themselves, your conscious mind will get excited and switch you to the physical eyes and you'll try to focus in on an image and it will all disappear. In a good session, a Screenshot might appear, wherein a small rectangular or circular screen will fill with perfectly focused moving pictures or still shots, either one. I've had circular screenshots display two revolving intricate patterns, with one band rotating one way and the other band rotating the other. On some occasions, if I accidentally disappeared the Screenshot by focusing in on it too hard, all I had to do was to bring back the Metsuke balance, the panoramic vision, and the Screenshot came right back. I've also seen three-dimensional images which were slowly rotating on a vertical axis so I could see them on all sides. The shadow people are fun, they look like paper cutout dolls but can be very agile. I recall watching them frolic on a moonlit snowscape once. The scene was effortless to behold, the details self-sustaining.
Carlos Castaneda's books talk about Metsuke all the time, but he never gave it a name. The word 'metsuke' is Japanese and refers to the soft eyes approach in the peaceful martial art Aikido which I practiced almost daily for two or three years, a third of a lifetime ago. One day I was being tested for a possible graduation by being attacked by three big black belts at the same time. I was quickly overwhelmed and scared out of my mind, trying to focus on techniques, when someone bumped me and I fell on my butt. As I fell, as if in slow motion, I watched the teacher getting ready to signal the end of the test, meaning I would not graduate that day, and suddenly I was shot full of resolve. I bounced off the mat as if it had big springs in it and in five seconds, all three of my attackers were in a pile at my feet. This was a case when Intent delivered my aim because my aim was true: I knew what I wanted and stopped thinking and worrying about it. For five seconds I practiced Metsuke by accident, but correctly: knew the location and movement of all three attackers at once, and knew what to do without thinking about it. Everybody's mind was blown, especially mine, because normally my fear of these tests buried me in technique and I lost my ability to improvise.
Metsuke is the act of balancing focus and detachment. It applies to all levels of the practice, not just Noticing images. For example, if you focus on trying to pry your soul out of your body, you are burying yourself in technique; you have no understanding of the process. But another day you might lie down practically floating away without effort because you're so relaxed and casual, which to me is the kind of confidence needed, in synthesis with firm resolve. This happened to me just the other day. I was doing my Vac-U-Move session with extreme casualness, putting my knees up if I felt fatigued from lying still; I even cracked my knuckles once, telling myself that if I managed to get unworlded, I'd have to invent a 'KILD' technique: Knuckle-Induced... Anyway, less than an hour later I experienced a milestone unworlding that I'll never forget. The gist of my methodology was not lying perfectly still, but having the right attitude and being absolutely convinced that retaining awareness through the transition to sleep is not only the only thing that matters; it also just happens to be easy and natural. Of utmost importance, I was not thinking these sorts of thoughts; I was feeling this way spontaneously and just bathing in the feeling as I breathed myself into the Vibes, ignored the Vibes, and headed for sleep with every intention of experiencing the whole thing with full consciousness. It worked.
Based on that case of an unusually perfect adjustment of Metsuke as an overall attitude during an enthusiastic test of a new unworlding technique, I have to say that Relax-No-Matter-What is the crowning achievement of a Frawmbickler. This is the ultimate act which gralthifies the Miruvorning Vroombelleration, the flight to freedom. Mastery of Relax-No-Matter-What leads to a type of expansion. At this point the delicate balance among the Seven changes state from swirling energies bouncing off of each other and snaps into what I'm now calling Unibody: a solid, real, physical sensation, more real than what you now consider reality to be. All the energy invested up to now causes the pot to suddenly boil, and you are no longer chunks of ice and swirling streams of water in a roiling, raucous, hurricane of randomness, but a homogeneous boiler full of potent steam, expanding in a single, unified direction: every direction, i.e. into the Nowhere, the doorway to anywhere. This state is marked by spontaneous (I said spontaneous) laughter, the kind that comes about for no particular reason and doesn't mean anything. The kind that bubbles up by itself. Suddenly nothing seems important, while simultaneously, everything seems possible. On the other hand, a results-oriented practice either leads to no results or you might perhaps force yourself into the mold of an asshole who can OOBE, congratulations. I have no ambition to increase my natural assholishness by doing a forced practice, and I find that a spontaneous practice disallows heavy focus on results by holding results at arm's length
The Breath of Flight
In order to achieve a dozen Awakenings in an hour, I use the Breath of Flight. Lying down, I inhale fully, expanding the belly and then the rib cage outward, then without hesitation I release all the air with a relaxed whoosh. If the inhalation is done too perfectly, you will stiffen up. If the exhalation is pushed out too forcefully you will hyperventilate. I prefer not to pass out uncontrollably but to gradually expand into the Unibody, which is probably what some people are calling the 'lead blanket' or 'gravity blanket' that precedes the Vibes.
Because some people are going to force themselves to pass out by hyperventilating instead of following the instructions above to allow a relaxed, unforced but relatively sudden exhale, I absolutely forbid anyone to practice the Breath of Flight. I also call this the Buzz Breath, and I do it on my evening walks, which I call Breathwalking, when the object is obviously not to pass out, but to get high in the early evening air and to absorb the mystery of the night energy. In 1980 I practiced the Buzz Breath continuously during all my waking hours, non-stop, for a month, and during that time I had my first conscious unworlding as well as my all-time favorite dream experience when I met the then-current version of my future self, Stumped-No-More the fearless fiddler. When I restarted this practice in November 2015, a steady practice of daily breathing sessions, lying down, led to my next two conscious unworldings, which were classic OBE exits. Since then, I've wandered through a lot of methodology and theorizing, but it's always my goal to return to what I know, and have always known. The Breath of Flight has the capability of encompassing all the other Frawmbickly Acts. This is why I forbid you to practice it. If you want to get there the easy way, I want that to be your decision, so I won't tell you to just, 'Breathe More Air Than You Want'. I don't want to get sued by the survivors of some drunk who tries doing the Buzz Breath in a hot tub and drowns, or some idiot who passes out walking down the street and falls under a truck.
Denormopia
Normopia is the myopia of the 2-3-4 Body/Mind/World as it sees the world in its typical, accustomed way. It's a style of mentality, the Frumbessly style. To recap the function of 2ness, 3ness, and 4ness, this style of thought is unique to the individual, attached to the individual's memories, and arranged according to the individual's personal habits. Our inertia-bound systems of thought systematically recreate the world in a similar way once per Moment, and the result is a "life," a steady stream of experiences which seem to logically relate to one another.
Denormopia is a form of Noticing in which you lie down to go to sleep but carefully watch your thoughts, noticing each thought that comes up, until you Notice a thought which doesn't fit the life story of the 2-3-4. The thought or thought stream will not identify with who you are, will not attach to your memory stream, and/or will not fit your system of ordering time. This is not difficult or profound, although it may sound abstract or abstruse depending on whether or not you've ever Noticed it before. Denormopia is absolutely normal; it happens to everybody every time they go to sleep. It's a simple matter of watching more carefully as you drift asleep, with the focus being on your thoughts. You'll know the spontaneously illogical hypnagogic thought stream the moment you see it, and this knowing will bump you back awake a little. But then the tendency is to immediately fall asleep without warning. So the point of Denormopia is to use the illogical thought as a warning sign that you're about to walk off the cliff with blinders on, that is to say, you're about to go through the Urumara unconsciously. So just try harder to Continuously Pay Attention as you proceed through the Urumara into the Unworld. Repeat the affirmation 'RATS, SIS': Retain Awareness through the Transition to Sleep... Sleep In Seconds!
Finally, relative lucidity is simply a matter of increased awareness. Pay attention and focus your intention on awareness when you're going to sleep; what other method could there be? If your desire for lucidity is consistently greater than your desire for unconsciousness, and this desire is backed up by action, you can't fail. Some of the actions you can take are desribed above; notice they are not unworlding techniques, because teaching unworlding techniques is a waste of time since they don't work unless someone's somehow gotten himself ready to get unworlded, in which case any technique will work. Otherwise, lacking the Magical Mindset, you will not master lucidity, because when you arrive at the Moment of Choice and can clearly see that you could either go for more lucidity or else you could go for more blind unconsciousness, that's the Moment which you needed to be preparing yourself for. If you wait to prepare for that choice till bedtime or the middle of the night, it will be too late, because the choice of going for blind unconsciousness is advertised by the Voice of Idiossification: a trickster, a seductive voice, a cool, soothing, chocolatey goodness... while the increase of lucidity requires your wanting to experience the unknown, which isn't scary for most people till they're staring it in the face, and suddenly it's a cliff and some idiot who writes weird affirmations in your dream journal no longer thinks you're ready to jump off some damn cliff. Pitiful excuses suddenly seem playful, beautiful, downright splendorous, maybe even profoundly evolutionary, while obviously perfectly sensible at the same time. Especially to beginners, the inner urging to choose the unknown over blessed deep sleep does not feel like a seductive voice, or a cool, soothing, chocolatey goodness. Only convincing the conscious mind of the clearly unmistakable superiority of the scary, bewildering, unknown goal while you are wide awake will prepare you for the slippery, slimy test when you detect the challenge of the Urumara just ahead, and you suddenly smell... fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies... somewhere behind you...
